On the Sunday we'll be climbing at Awesome Walls - with it's famous 23.5m Tall Walls - one of the highest artificial climbing walls in England!!
What will we be doing?
The focus of today's activities is indoor climbing, with the challenges of climbing that you'll find on natural rock outdoor - simply indoors! Awesome walls has a fantastic range of climbing walls; gentle slabs, features, cracks, chimneys and incredible overhangs; stepped, concave and convex walls, and did we mention the tall walls? There's over a hundred lines located within the former engine house of Pear Mill. But if climbing isn't your thing - Awesome Walls also has a massive bouldering room with two separate climbing areas so we're running a dedicated Bouldering Session too (sign up here).
Who's it for?
This event is for climbers of all abilities, whether you're an absolute beginner or a seasoned rock climber, then we're sure you'll have fun today and if you're looking to develop you're climbing skills we have a number of dedicated workshops through the afternoon for you to sign up too;
- Beginners Climber Taster Session; (1:00pm) If you have never tried indoor climbing before - this event is your perfect opportunity to give it a try with one of our great Climbing Leaders on hand to start your climbing experience, show you the ropes and teach you everything you need to know to climb safely. (sign up here).
- Experienced Climbers Coaching Workshop; (12:30pm) Overwhelmed by overhangs? Failing with feeble footwork? Challenged by crimps? Then this professionally coached session will work out your weaknesses and get you to smash those slabs and really push your grade!! (sign up here).
- Fall Training Workshop; (2:30pm) Fear of Falling holding you back your progress on lead climbs? Then this professionally coached session will develop your technique and confidence to fall properly, to get comfortable with safely falling, being caught with the rope and your harness by your belayer. (sign up here).
But if you just want to climb, be it top-rope or lead or even auto belays, then please sign up through this event page to help the organiser's and the climbing centre know who'll be attending.

Participation Statement
Please note that every person participating should be aware of (and accept) that those members perceived as ‘in charge’ or leading the event are not necessarily qualified, do not need to be qualified, and are not regarded by OutdoorLads, or themselves as ‘technical experts’ but are amateur climbers with some experience and who are happy to impart their knowledge. Any advice given should be considered with this in mind by the recipient. All those attending the event must also be aware of the centre's own terms and conditions of participation and abide by them, along with any instructions given by the centres staff. Everyone must also take responsibility for their own safety while participating in Indoor climbing events.
What to bring
If you have your own climbing gear (i.e. harness, shoes, chalk-bag, Belay plate and screw-gate karabiner, climbing rope), you can bring this along, but please make sure it is in good condition. As a minimum you will need the use of a climbing harness and a belay device (belay plate and a screw-gate karabiner, or a gri-gri if you have one). If you do not have your own, ODL do have some you can borrow but please message the event leader and we'll try and reserve one for you.
We've also booked a meeeting room at the centre, where you can change and leave bags during the session (including weekend bag's if you're heading straight to the train station afterwards). A limited number of lockers are also available, although you will need to provide your own padlock.
What to wear
It is best to wear either shorts, combats or tracksuit bottoms. No jeans or any form of trouser which hampers movement. A t-shirt or vest is also suitable. If you have any OutdoorLads branded clothing then please try and wear this as it will give the group a good level of visibility. Any jewellery such as rings, watches, chains or bangles should be removed before beginning the session to prevent injury.
Food & drink
There is a cafe area at the centre where hot and cold drinks along with snacks can be purchased, while the cafe in the next-door Victorian Emporium has the most incredible selection of cakes and more hearty light-bites!
