APR25: Steaming into Spring

Even though the event is full, people often drop out and places become available. Please join the waiting list if you would like to attend by signing up to the event in the normal way. (This does mean that you will automatically get a place if you reach the top of the queue so will still need to cancel if you no longer can attend.)
The South Devon Railway recreates the golden days of travel as it takes you on a trip back in time on a traditional Great Western Railway branch line running from Buckfastleigh and Totnes Riverside.
On this walk, we'll be starting at Buckfast Station and then follow the River Dart valley downstream, through Dartington Estate, with it's Medieval Great Hall, Deer Park and Grand II* listed Garden into Totnes.
At Totnes will then jump on the Steam Train to head back to Buckfast.
A single train ticket from Totnes to Buckfast is £14.95 and dogs are an extra £2.50 if you want to bring your 4 legged buddy (2024 prices - will update once 2025 season pricing is announced).
When we get back to Buckfast, why not finish the day by popping into the famous Buckfast Butterfly and Otter Sanctuary
Dogs
Dogs are welcome to join us on this event, but we do ask the following:
- Please appreciate the fact that not everyone is a dog owner or lover- especially when we stop to eat
- Please ensure you adhere to the Countryside Code at all times - see (Keeping Dogs Under Effective Control)
- Dogs are not allowed into the (optional) Butterfly and Otter Sanctuary
If your dog is uncontrolled and strays in open land frightening other animals or livestock, the leader is supported by the OutdoorLads board of trustees to ask you to leave the event as this is not acceptable behaviour.

You MUST complete a Participation Statement, in addition to booking your event space before attending an OutdoorLads event. You only need to complete this Participation Statement once, not for each event you attend.

What to bring
Water: bring at least two litres in a water bottle, or better still, a hydration bladder
Medicines: if you have hay fever, diabetes, minor ailments etc.
Day Rucksack: typically 20-30 litres, they are comfortable to wear and allow you to use your arms freely
Waterproof Bags: keep spare clothing, electronics and anything else dry even when your rucksack leaks. Use Ziploc type food bags or, better still, outdoor activity waterproof bags.
Boots: waterproof and breathable hiking boots with good ankle support
Gaiters: recommended for wet/winter weather and boggy conditions
Socks: proper walking socks will keep your feet dry and help prevent blisters, and carry a spare, dry pair
Walking Poles: always optional, some people love them, and some people hate them, give them a try and decide for yourself
Layered, breathable clothing: lets you quickly adapt to changes in the weather and body temperature. Go for a base layer (vest or t-shirt) and a mid layer (a micro fleece or shirt) and in cooler weather add an outer layer (a windproof jacket or thick fleece). Bring changes of clothing so you can stay warm and dry
Trousers: no jeans as they become heavy and cold in the rain, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry
Waterproof Jacket: breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry.
Gloves: windproof, or better still, waterproof gloves are the best choice, bring a spare pair if expecting rain.
Hat: stay warm
Sunglasses: for any sunny day, even in winter
Balaclava or snood: keep your face warm in high winds
Snacks: biscuits, energy bars, gels, bananas, chocolate or dried fruit for example. Put them somewhere easy to get hold of.
Lunch: bring a packed lunch unless otherwise stated
Hot drink: a flask of tea or coffee
Mobile Phone: keep it in a waterproof bag for use in emergencies, and a spare battery/charger is a good idea
Map and compass: the walk leader will have these, but if you like map reading or want to develop your skills, bring yours along
Food & drink
We'll be aiming for lunch at Dartington Estate, where there is the Green Table Cafe for you to buy lunch at, or you can bring your own packed lunch if you'd prefer.
Please bring water and snacks for consuming throughout the day.
