#GetOutMore this April!
This event is one of loads of events taking place over the same weekend! Check out all the events over the weekend of 4-6 April 2025: OutdoorLads.events/APR25. Great for new and regular members!
Join Kev and Tim on a 12km walk from the historic village of Dore in South Yorkshire, over the Houndkirk and Burbage moors before descending down into the Nether Padley gorge in the Peak District.
We begin the walk from Dore and Totley station car park (parking is free at the time of writing).
After passing through Dore, a delightful village on the southwestern edge of Sheffield with a connection to the Anglo-Saxon King Ecgbehrt, our path takes us up through the beautiful Blackamore nature reserve, which is home to a population of red deer. We will then cross over the moors that mark the boundary between South Yorkshire and Derbyshire and the Peak District itself. Along the way we will be taking in Carl Wark – postulated to be an Iron Age Hill fort, and Mother Cap – a gritstone rock formation which boasts stunning views over the Hope and Derwent Valleys, before descending through the Padley Gorge to Grindleford Station where the walk ends.
We will then take the train back to Dore through the Totley tunnel, which was, at the time it was built, the second longest train tunnel in the UK.
Train tickets for the Grindleford to Dore and Totley station return leg cost £3.80 and takes just 6 mins,. Trains run hourly. As such there will be an opportunity stop at a Café or Pub at the Grindleford end before the short train ride back.

What to bring
Though we will be sticking to well-worn paths, the route does take in a variety of terrain, and a few sections are steeper and more uneven, it is recommended to wear hiking boots. You won't get sent home on this occasion if you're wearing trainers (however your footwear should have good grip considering that it may be boggy in places if we get wet weather ahead of the walk).
The recommended minimum kit for this event is as follows;
- Walking Boots
- Socks
- Gaiters (optional)
- Walking Shorts/Trousers (not jeans)
- Waterproof Jacket
- Mid Layer (e.g. Fleece)
- Warm Hat
- Gloves
- Rucksack
- Food & Water (at least 3.5 pints / 2 litre)
Food & drink
Please bring a packed lunch and plenty of water (at least 3.5 pints / 2 litre). As we are starting quite late in the morning, an afternoon snack may be handy.
