Join Paul for a relaxed and social bike ride in Liverpool.
Starting in Central Liverpool we'll take advantage of the city's network of cycle paths and quieter roads, following National Cycle Network (NCN) Route 56 out to the Liverpool Loop Line, which is part of the Transpennine Trail. We'll follow the trail as far as the Halewood Park Triangle before making our way back to the start via Garston and Otterspool Promenade with it's fantastic waterside views.
Who’s It For?
This ride is perfect for all abilities - whether you're a relative beginner, a seasoned cyclist or just fancy a casual spin with good company.
If you are driving to the event or local to Liverpool there is the option of meeting us near Otterspool where free parking is available. This will potentially knock several miles off the distance, depending on whether you decide to stay with the group as we continue along the Mersey back into the city centre. See location section for information about the alternative meeting place/time.
The route also offers options for leaving early and using public transport to get back to the city centre, for anyone who fancies a shorter ride.
Pace & Terrain
Speed: 8 to 10 mph, always at the pace of the slowest rider—no one gets left behind. Depending on our pace, we'll be cycling for about 2.5 to 3 hours. The overall event timing is longer to allow for natural stops and starts, a quick break along the way and to enjoy a drink and maybe a bite to eat together at the end of the ride.
Route: Mostly flat with some climbs, mixing roads, trails, and riverside paths.
Traffic: Some (mainly quieter) roads—riders should feel comfortable cycling alongside traffic.
Bike & Rider Prep:
- Best suited to hybrid bikes, the route is also doable on a road or mountain bike. The surfaces are mostly level/tarmac, with a cobbled section near the Albert Dock.
- Ensure your bike is in good condition (inflated tyres, working brakes, oiled chain). The ride leader cannot provide repairs.
- Bring a spare inner tube, a packed lunch for the break if you want one, snacks, and water.
- Wear suitable comfortable clothing. Layers including something wind/water proof are recommended.
- You must wear a helmet as this is one of OutdoorLads cycling participation requirements.
Weather Conditions
If extreme weather is forecast, we may postpone the ride. We’ll notify participants as early as possible.

Food & drink
Our break will be outdoors so bring a packed lunch if you want one, as well as any snacks and drinks that you'd like, As a minimum, please ensure you bring water to drink.
Options for post-ride refreshments and socialising include the Brittannia Inn or one of the numerous venues at the Albert Dock and Pier Head. Other suggestions from participants on the day will be welcome and we'll go with the consensus. As it's the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, some places may be very busy so we'll play it by ear. Don't forget to bring a lock if possible.
