Take a step back in time to 1940’s war time Britain and experience what the people of Stockport and the surrounding areas experienced when sheltering from Nazi bombing raids.

Carved into the natural sandstone cliffs, the intriguing network of underground tunnels offers visitors an unparalleled insight into life in wartime Britain in the 1940's.

Opened in 1939, the shelters were the largest purpose-built civilian air raid shelters in the country.

Originally designed to provide shelter for up to 3,850 people, they were subsequently expanded to accommodate as many as 6,500 people during the second world war.

This labyrinth of tunnels are almost a mile long and were carved out of the red sandstone hills on which Stockport stands. During the Blitz they provided shelter and a way of life for families in and around Stockport.

In 1996 the shelters were opened as a visitor attraction and attract thousands of visitors each year.

The intriguing network of underground tunnels offers visitors an unparalleled insight into life in 1940’s wartime Britain. From the tunnels to the state-of-the-art audio guide, visitors learn about the experiences of local people during the war.

Explore this underground world and experience a way of life beneath Stockport's streets. Fitted with electric lights, wooden benches, bunk beds, wardens’ post, and a first aid post.

OutdoorLads has secured a private expanded evening tour, allowing us to explore tunnels which are normally closed to the general public and gain an insight from the experienced guides about how tough life was for the people sheltering here during World War Two.

The tour will last approximately 1.5 hours after which we can grab some food in Stockport’s trendy Overbank area a short walk away.

You will need to pay the entry cost of £15 per person on arrival direct to the venue - cash or card accepted.

Further information about the shelters can be found here.
