Join us for a fantastically regal weekend break on the glorious Isle of Wight, staying in an impressive Edwardian house in its own expansive grounds close to the cliffs and beaches in Totland.

Osborne, on the north of the Isle of Wight, was the holiday residence of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. This royal stamp of approval brought many famous Victorians to visit and settle on the Island.

We'll be following in their footsteps along with the historical greats of Alfred Lord Tennyson, Charles Dickens, Lewis Carroll and John Keats who were also inspired by this "Enchanted Isle".

Relax and enjoy a great time with friends old and new when over the weekend we'll take in as many of the beautiful sights as possible, with both a walk and cycle activity on the Saturday and a shorter walk on the Sunday.

Itinerary

Friday evening will start our weekend off with a "high tea" themed ODL buffet.

On Saturday we will have both a walk and a cycle ride on offer, followed by a three course dinner in the evening and a quiz.

Sunday will have a final walk to the Needles with a pub lunch.

What to bring

There will be walking and cycling activities available over the weekend and you should bring suitable kit for those you wish to take part in.

If you are intending to cycle, please note that it is OutdoorLads' policy that a helmet should be worn. Bikes hired locally include a helmet and puncture repair kit.

Please keep an eye out on the weather forecast nearer the time and pack accordingly!

Don't forget a towel and clothes to wear around the hostel.

Food & Drink

On the Friday night will be the traditional OutdoorLads buffet although in keeping with the Royal theme we'll be having a "high tea".  Please bring something for 1-2 people which we can share - think summer, think picnics, think elegance!

The evening meal on the Saturday night is included in the price of the event and will also fit in to the weekend's theme.

Breakfast on Saturday and Sunday is also included, along with tea and coffee.

You will need to provide your own lunches over the weekend but please remember there will limited space in the fridges at the hostel.

How to get there

There are a number of ways to get to the Isle of Wight depening on where you are starting from and whether you are coming by car, bike or on foot.

You can check on the options available to you here https://www.iwight.com/Visitors/Parking-and-Travel/Travel-Getting-to-and...

To give you an idea, there is the Wightlink Ferry from Lymington to Yarmouth, running every hour and taking around 30min. This should cost around £21 return for a foot passenger.

Once on the island, you can then take bus route 7 towards Alum Bay to Church Hill and then it's a short walk to the hostel. Buses run roughly every 30 minutes.

If you're driving and are happy to give a lift to someone else, please post in the comments below to arrange a convenient time and route.

What's going to happen

Friday evening:

Fitting in with the weekend's theme, the customary ODL buffet will be a "high tea" - a chance to catch up with members you already know but also an opportunity to meet some new faces. If this is your first ODL Hostel event you will be made very welcome.  We will also have a briefing to run through the plan for the weekend.

Saturday:

Andre will be leading a walk that will take in a wide host of the island's picturesque highlights and suitable for all abilities.

There will also be a cycling option available - either bring your own bike or you can hire one nearby and have it delivered to the hostel. The route will be about 80km and take in the amazing views of the Solent, Tennyson Down, the Needles and more! It will be on a combination of disused railway tracks, cycle paths and roads but they should all be good enough for both a road and hybrid bike.

Saturday evening - a three course meal will be provided and then later in the evening a short light-hearted quiz plus a chance to relax and socialise hopefully outside in the gardens if the weather permits.

Sunday:

After breakfast, it's time to clean the hostel and then there'll be a final walk to the Needles with a pub lunch before we make our way off the island and home.

Give something back to ODL

Have you thought about being an event leader? Being a leader is an incredible way to give something back to OutdoorLads.  Check out our Leader Application page to get more information or have a chat with me over the weekend.
