This walk heads into the North Downs area in Surrey overlooking Reigate, with the path also forming part of the Pilgrims Way and the North Downs Way.
Starting from Merstham railway station, which is on the London to Brighton railway line, the route will meander out of the small town and start the accent up on to the Downs. The first point of interest will be the view overlooking Reigate, with Gatwick Airport in the distance, and the South Downs on a clear day. There is a small kiosk at the view point for refreshments.
Continuing along the path, we safely cross the A217 on Reigate Hill Footbridge which is an early example of a reinforced concrete bridge in the country. Reigate Fort will appear which was built in 1898 as part of measures to protect the British Empire from invasion by France. Further along there is the Inglis Memorial which was originally a drinking fountain for horses. A further view point is at Colley Hill
At this point the land is relatively level as the walk will progress over the M25 onto the London side, and pass through the heathlands of Walton and Banstead via Mogador. Our next stop will be at the Well House Inn.
Once everyone has had a chance for some refreshment, and with some undulation again we will eventually descend into Merstham.
What to bring
Items that you should think about wearing includes: hat, waterproof jacket/outer layer, mid layer, base layer, gloves, walking and trousers, gaiters (as it could be muddy), boots with comfortable walking socks. A rucksack would be good to have these in as well as any food and drink.
Food & drink
Whilst there are is a café at Reigate Hill, I hope that we can find somewhere to stop in the countryside for lunch. I suggest you bring with you all the food and drink for the entire walk to avoid disappointment.
