Lewes is a fabulous place in its own right and as a walk venue as there are so many different routes which can be done in all directions, often with minimal similarities between each. Today's walk takes us through the Priory ruins and Railway Land Nature reserve in the heart of Lewes and then along the river and up onto the Downs to Blackcap, a National Trust site overlooking the Low Weald of Sussex.
The Downs are impressive at all times of the year, but even on the worst Winter days they are invigorating as one battles through cloud, winds and horizontal rain or blizzards... hopefully we won't have to encounter these extremes on this second to last day of the year.
However, we will encounter mud and probably plenty of it so do be prepared for this; it is inevitable at this time of the year. If you have walking poles they do make negotiating awkward terrain so much easier.
Food & drink
Please bring a packed lunch and water to keep you hydrated, even in Winter. Also cash for a pub stop after the walk.
