An 8 mile day walk with views of Mam Tor and the Winnats Pass along the ridge of Hollins Cross and Lose Hill and a visit to CAMRA pub -The Cheshire Cheese at Hope
We will begin at car park in Hope village and walk along the river to Castleton. Our ascent starts up Goose Hill past Peak Cavern and Speedwell Cavern to reach the Winnats Pass, which was once thought to have originated as a giant collapsed cavern; however, a more recent explanation is that it is a ravine between the coral reefs in an ancient tropical sea.
We then traverse under Mam Tor which is a 517m high ridge made of shale. The main A625 road used zig zag traverse down the front of Mam Tor but after many landslides the road was eventually abandoned and we walk up the abandoned tarmac to the top of the ridge at Hollins Cross where we can now see down into the Hope Valley and Edale and Kinder Scout.
We continue along the ridge with fine views on both sides of the ridge past Back Tor to reach the high point at Lose Hill (476m, 1562ft)
A rapid descent is now made via Crimea Farm to the village of Hope and a well deserved visit to the CAMRA pub, The Cheshire Cheese.
