The Howgills have got to be one of the most talked about mountain ranges in the North of England simply for the reason that everyone drives past them heading north on the M6 and must be caught at some point thinking...."I really wanna get walking up there". Well here is your chance. Enjoy this great day, a relatively challenging one too but one that rewards you with beautiful views into Yorkshire and also into The Lake District too. This is the North showing off big time.
Our route from Sedbergh takes us up Settlebeck Gill on the Dales Head Way until we reach the undulating top of the Howgills. Our target of The Calf, the highest peak in the Howgill Fells at 676m soon comes into sight. The reward is panoramic views that will hopefully be coupled with beautiful sunshine but no guarantees on that of course. We then descend to follow the river to Cautley Spout, Englands highest waterfall about ground, tumbling some 650ft in broken cascades down to the beck at its base. A worth photo opportunity. Our route then returns to Sedbergh via The Pennine Journey bridleway for a cuppa or a pint.
